Learning how to generate more tension in your plank will allow you to engage more muscles, which will help you get stronger over time.  The ability to generate tension in the plank can carry over to other exercises such as deadlifts, kettlebell swings and all sorts of pressing movements (pushups, bench press, military press).  The quality of your plank is more important than how long you can hold it.  Tense your muscles and see how your body responds.
